Acknowledgments David Schloen designed OCHRE’s database structure and user interface. He created the “Archaeological Markup Language” (ArchaeoML), which is the formal specification of the database structure. Sandra Schloen wrote the Java software for OCHRE and implemented its XML database. Others who have contributed to the development of the system as pioneer users and constructive critics include (in alphabetical order): Michael Berger, Aaron Burke, Dennis Campbell, Philip Engblom, Gene Gragg, Harry Hoffner, Janet Johnson, Charles Jones, Eric Kansa, Lec Maj, Leann Pace, John Sanders, Matthew Stolper, Edward Stratford, Eudora Struble, and Theo van den Hout. The OCHRE project has benefited from the data these people have provided and the suggestions they have made concerning the features needed in the system. Special thanks go to Charles Blair, co-director of the Digital Library Development Center in the University of Chicago Library, for providing access to the XML database server on which OCHRE runs, and for the excellent technical support that he and his team have supplied. Several research and teaching projects at the University of Chicago have served as pilot projects during the development of OCHRE. These are listed below, with buttons that automatically start OCHRE in view-only mode within the selected project, using the interface options chosen by the project for anonymous users. This illustrates the way in which OCHRE can be customized for various projects, shielding the user from unnecessary details. |
